Brain Man VR is co-hosting a new podcast

Most people who decide to start developing their own virtual reality experiences usually find themselves going onto the internet to seek advice when they get stuck. And the results of such searches often point the budding VR developer towards YouTube where a host of kind and thoughtful individuals have taken the time to create tutorials to guide their fellow VR enthusiasts. One of the best of these heroic individuals, who freely give up their time to help people get to grips with the complexities of the Unity game engine is Justin P Barnett.

In the summer of 2021, I found these tutorials absolutely invaluable because I had decided to pivot from building for the Vive VR Headsets to the Quest 2 headsets. There are many other YouTube tutorials out there on this topic, but I really liked his style. Some of his rivals are way to self-conscious, others try too hard to be cool and yet others ramble on - taking far too long to get to the point. Justin, for me, found the right balance. He clearly takes great care in structuring each tutorial to be thorough and complete, always starting each project from scratch to help avoid confusion. There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of following a 30 min tutorial only to find that it doesn’t actually work when you hit play. Sometimes the host forgets to mention a step, sometimes they’ve got their machine set up differently to yours, but doesn’t explicitly mention it. That NEVER happens with Justin’s videos, which I always really appreciated.

Anyway the main announcement here is that Justin and I recently teamed up to co-host a podcast together. The first episode is coming out very soon and as we enjoyed recording that one so much, we plan to record a few more to see how they go down in the community. We’re an unlikely pair, what with him being an American in his 20’s who has been coding since he was 10 years old and me being a Brit who already had a first class degree in neuroscience when Justin was born - but strangely it seems to work! Our mutual love of VR development seems to transcend all boundaries :-)

If you’ve listened to one, please do get in touch and let us know what you think. And in particular if there is anyone out there in the VR world that you’d like us to interview, please do drop me a line to let me know.
